Rent The Runway Saved My Life

May 25, 2016

Okay, dramatic title but I will most definitely be renting all of my dresses and formal wear from here on out.......
After a month of procrastinating, I finally ordered a dress for my boyfriend’s brother’s wedding, about a week before the big day.  I typically love anything Reformation and had been eyeing this dress for months, so I felt pretty good when I eventually ordered it.  It didn't even cross my mind that the dress might not fit or look as pictured.
Come Wednesday afternoon (leaving Thursday for the wedding) the dress was delivered to me at work and I was ecstatic.  The package sat on my desk all day and I was so tempted to try it on immediately because it looked absolutely beautiful.  Rather than go straight home after work to try it on and leave myself some time to figure out a backup plan, I went to the mall to find shoes and accessories to match this beautiful dress that I was so certain would be just perfect.  When I finally got home around 8:30pm, I slipped into the dress only to find that I F***ING HATED IT.  Don't get me wrong, the print and cut was elegant and tasteful but it was just not for me.  The material was too thin, and it looked more like a sundress than something you'd wear to a formal event.  I could only blame myself for this predicament and I knew I only really had one option.

I slept it off, and first thing Thursday morning I got on my laptop and went to Rent The Runway.  Now, I typically hate relying on this but I actually had no choice at that point.  I chose two designer dresses (in two sizes just in case), two pairs of earrings, and a necklace that would go well with both dresses.  I used my 25% off promo code (that I receive via email fairly often) and  checked out for a total of $130.  Mind you, that's still $70 less than the dress I bought last minute from Reformation.  I called the hotel to give them a quick heads-up about the package and then went about my day and hoped for the best.

My package arrived at the hotel around noon the next day.  I rushed up to our room to try them on and could not have been happier with one of the dresses.  My first choice was the Opening Ceremony dress and it was even better than I imagined.  I was a little hesitant about ordering a midi length black dress for a spring wedding, because I feel like everyone always wears black and spring is for bold and colorful.  But this was not your typical black dress.  It was the perfect length for someone tall like me and it fit like a glove.  It hugged all the right places, and because of the thick stretchy material and patterned fabric, it was extremely flattering.  Although very fitted in the midsection, it allowed me to move comfortably the whole night and (in my opinion) tear it up on the dance floor.  I figured I’d need to go crazy with accessories wearing a plain black dress, but ended up wearing a simple gold necklace with gold studs and it was perfect.

If there’s one thing I cannot stress enough to RTR users, it's that you need to read through the reviews of people who have previously rented any dress you're interested in.  This has definitely been the deciding factor and saving grace for me when renting dresses in the past.  There was one dress that I was in love with, but all the reviews said not to get it if you will be walking around a lot or dancing because the bottom was so tight you could barely move your legs.  The other users are so helpful as well. Each woman gives her height, weight, normal dress size, bust size and body type. They also post pictures of themselves in the dress so you can see how it looks on a real person and not just the stick skinny models in the website's pictures.  Most women even offer their insight as to what you should wear underneath (spanx/bra), whether or not to size up or down, and what shoes they found look best with that particular dress.

I will certainly be using Rent The Runway as my go-to for formal wear from here on out.  As someone who gets bored quickly of my own clothing and doesn't really like to wear the same dress to multiple events, it is far more cost and time-efficient for me as we head into wedding season.
